The facts
An employees' union complained that a company required staff to give fingerprints for attendance without seeking consent, without explaining how the data would be used, and that staff who input fingerprints incorrectly were bullied by the administrator. After the Office intervened, the company upgraded the biometric apparatus so it also works with a card system, employees were asked for consent, refusers were given the card alternative, and a union representative confirmed there was no objection to the new arrangement, verified on a site visit.
Orders and outcome
The enquiry was successfully concluded and no offence was found proven under the Data Protection Act.
