Uganda's first criminal conviction under the Data Protection and Privacy Act, Cap 97: the director of Nano Loans Microfinance Ltd (operator of the Quickloan app) was convicted on two counts - failure to register with the PDPO and unlawful processing - after a borrower's name, phone number and photograph were reused in a WhatsApp video with a threat of TikTok publication over loan non-repayment, breaching purpose limitation. A court-sanctioned reconciliation under section 160 of the Magistrates Courts Act followed, with compensation offered and further proceedings stayed.
