The facts
An ex-manager complained that a handwritten, signed note of his, kept in the personal file of another ex-employee of the company, was published in a newspaper article. The newspaper and the company were both asked for clarifications, and officers who had accessed the personal file all denied disclosing anything to the press. The enquiry could not establish where the disclosure occurred, and the complainant, contacted by phone, said the file could be closed.
Orders and outcome
No evidence was found to conclude a breach of the Data Protection Act and the enquiry was closed as confirmed by the complainant, with the respondents reminded of their obligations, in particular the press respondent's duty to verify that publication of personal data is reasonably for public interest purposes.
