Meta Platforms (Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses)
Suo moto investigation opened. ODPC, April 2026.
The facts
The ODPC opened a suo motu investigation into Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses over concerns of mass surveillance and the unauthorised use of Kenyans' personal data for artificial intelligence training. The move followed a 6 March 2026 appeal by the Nairobi-based digital rights group The Oversight Lab, and more than 150 organisations and individuals endorsed the call for a probe. The glasses carry a discreet camera capable of recording people without their consent or knowledge. The ODPC confirmed investigations had begun and said it would communicate the outcome once the probe concludes.
